Some Unix runlevel descriptions, here because I can never remember them.
If you brick a host because these descriptions are wrong, then that's your problem. Tell me, though: when I stop laughing, I'll fix the description.
Linux

Shutdown.

Single user mode.
2 / 3 / 4
Multi user modes. 3 is normal for TTY on RedHat.

Multi user mode with X (usually).

Reboot.
a / b / c
Pseudo runlevels. Runs scripts for those levels but doesn't change the current runlevel.
Q / q
Reload /etc/inittab.
S / s
Single user mode (not generally used).

Drop to firmware (OK prompt).

Multi user mode.
